Business Foundations Mathematics

Module Objectives

The module provides the essential mathematics competencies required for business studies. Covering topics from basic arithmetic and algebra to advanced calculus, probability, and financial mathematics, the course systematically builds mathematical literacy. Students develop computational skills, conceptual understanding, and the ability to apply mathematics to real-world business problems.

Upon completion, students will be able to:

  • Master mathematical language and notation
  • Solve algebraic equations and inequalities
  • Analyze and interpret functions and their properties
  • Apply differential and integral calculus to business applications
  • Use probability theory for risk assessment and decision-making
  • Apply financial mathematics to investment and loan problems
  • Develop logical reasoning and proof skills
  • Successfully pass the Feststellungsprüfung and begin their Bachelor’s program

Independent self-study is essential to achieve these objectives.

Assessment & Grading

This preparation module supports students in passing the mathematics component of the Feststellungsprüfung (assessment test) of a W-Course at Studienkolleg Hamburg. Success depends on motivation, independent learning, and consistent practice outside class.

This course is not formally graded by KLU. To pass it and to be admitted to the Feststellungsprüfung, you need two things: the required attendance (at least 75% of the achievable attendance points, see below), and at least 60% of the total points across all the tests described below. Homework, practice problems, and quizzes support your preparation, but those two requirements are what decide admission to the exam.

Attendance is tracked with points per session: arriving on time earns 2 points, arriving late earns 1 point, and missing a session earns 0 points. The 75% requirement is measured against these points: your points divided by the maximum achievable points must be at least 75%.

Tests. Throughout the course there are tests, written individually at the start of selected lectures. They are mostly short, though not always. The dates are announced at least one week in advance and may shift if we spend longer on a topic. Together they provide the points that count toward the 60% threshold.

Devices in class. Laptops and tablets are welcome: we use them for the course website, exercises, and some on-screen tests. Smartphones stay away during class. Please place yours on the lecturer’s desk at the start of each lecture and collect it at the end.

The value you get while learning mathematics are not mathematical concepts, definitions, theorems and proofs, but the lifetime and transferable skills that you can apply in every area of your life:

Important: Proficiency across all modules is required to pass the Feststellungsprüfung. Class time includes practice workshops and individual support.

AI Policy

Level 1: Pause – use of AI defined by the educator.

Course chatbot. A course chatbot is available on this website for exploratory study. It is designed to guide your problem-solving process rather than hand out answers: expect hints and questions back, not finished solutions. It runs on EU-hosted infrastructure (Mistral models, servers in Germany), and your conversations are not used to train models. Details are on the privacy page. Furthermore, the Math Helper can create new practice tasks based on the module content.

External AI tools. You may use external AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Mistral, Gemini). You are responsible for every step you rely on: understand it rather than copy it, since relying on AI to solve tasks for you weakens your preparation. Note that large language models are generally not very good at producing explicit step-by-step solutions to mathematical tasks: being pattern-based rather than rule-based, they are better suited to explaining concepts.

Exam. The Feststellungsprüfung does not allow AI usage.
